Research firm Gartner has now added its voice to those saying Microsoft has overtaken BlackBerry as the world’s No. 3 smartphone operating system. Microsoft’s Windows Phone held 3.3 percent of the world’s smartphone sales to users in the second quarter, compared to BlackBerry’s 2.7 percent.
Research firm IDC had already said in May that Microsoft had already vaulted over BlackBerry — though IDC measured shipments, rather than sales, as Gartner does.
Gartner also said that during the second quarter, worldwide smartphone sales exceeded sales of feature phones for the first time. Samsung retained its No. 1 title among smartphone vendors.
